When purchasing homes for sale in Fairfax, you're also purchasing a history. There's still a whiff of 60s counter-culture in Fairfax, where the Jefferson Airplane once played softball with the Grateful Dead. This town of 7500 residents that sits just north of Mt Tam is 30 minutes from San Francisco, and 17 miles from Pt Reyes. Fairfax offers that rare thing in Marin: affordability.

The heart of Fairfax is Broadway Boulevard. Parallel to Sir Frances Drake, which is the main traffic corridor heading west toward Pt Reyes, Broadway is a perfect walking street where locals shop at the Coffee Roastery, purchase fresh local produce at the farmer's market, and duck into Fairfax Variety for toys, tchochkes, and old-timey candy. If Fairfax feels like it is living in a time warp, that's just fine with its residents who have passed ordinances prohibiting chain stores, plastic bags, and Styrofoam takeout food packaging. The art deco movie theater on Broadway, and nightclub 19 Broadway which features live music are at the center of the action when it comes to nightlife in Fairfax.

Kids can still ride their bikes to school in Fairfax. Fairfax is served by three public schools, Virginia Avenue Elementary, Shirley Lane Elementary, and Fairfax Middle School, all of which are strongly supported by parents and civic groups.

Some of the most beautiful properties in Marin can be found in Kentfield, a quiet community of spacious older homes sited on large, lushly landscaped parcels. Perhaps the nerve center of this residential community can be found in the Woodlands Market, a unique gourmet grocery store, bakery, wine bar, and cafe. For more than 20 years, Woodlands Market has been the place where residents can their fill of local gossip at the same time they fill their grocery cart.
